Maine Woods

I decided to go to Maine today after being in Scotland so long. I blocked in the color loosely and without any drawing (but close looking at the photo), then indicated with pencil where I wanted to save the whites for the rocks. After that there was lots of putting more dark here and more color there and shaping the trees and the rocks. I'm not totally convinced that it's a very good composition but I like it, especially from a distance. Close up it is hard to read.

Jane,

This painting is very reminiscent of many of Carl Purcell's landscapes and your process sounds a great deal like his. As I try to get farther away from using masking fluid as a resist and just dropping in colors while saving the lights I know how difficult this can be, but you seemed to have carried this off very effectively. This is a great painting and one which could be developed well into a large painting, I think. You are definitely on the right track with this style.

Congrats again on being chosen WcW Artist of the Year!
